CHANGO is a smart 14-year-old Puerto Rican boy that comes to America with his family in the late 1980’s in search of a better life…
Beware the “mean streets” of Manhattan. Choice and opportunity are slim to none for a young boy on the verge of adulthood in the projects with a family to support.
The pull of drugs and money seem glamorous and exciting from the outside, but step inside CHANGO’S world and the picture is anything but pretty. Gang violence, death, drug addiction, police corruption, homelessness and betrayal are an everyday occurrence and simply part of the territory in the life of a drug lord.
It’s the 1990’s and David Dinkins is the Mayor of NYC. Crime is at an all time high and the crack epidemic is out of control. Instead of hitting the books CHANGO quickly learns the business of supply and demand in the drug game. Staying in school becomes less and less of an option in the projects.
CHANGO’S mother Elizabeth works a multitude of menial jobs in an attempt to keep her sons CHANGO and Raul safe and off the streets. When they are thrown out of their home after Elizabeth refuses to have sex with their landlord, the basic necessities for human existence become compromised…
